London Landmark Revitalised With Help From illbruck

Image Above: Temperature House at Kew Gardens

Renovations at a world-famous London landmark have been completed with help from sealant, tape and adhesive specialists illbruck.

Kew Gardens is known around the globe for its phenomenal collection of over 30,000 rare plant species – many of which are showcased in its mammoth-sized Temperate House, the biggest greenhouse in the world.

That greenhouse has recently undergone a comprehensive refurbishment – and illbruck sealant products played an integral role in making that happen.

“This wasn’t a minor project,” comments illbruck Product Manager David Naylor. “It involved taking the structure right back to the bare metal and starting again from scratch.

“The Temperate House protects some of the rarest plants in the world, and welcomes millions of visitors every year, and that demanded the very highest performance.

“That’s why we recommended FS125, our one-part, neutral curing silicone sealant. Its longevity, durability and excellent primer-less adhesion made it an ideal choice for use on either side of each roof truss, ensuring that rain water runs off the glass and down drainage channels.

“The iron trusses themselves received a new coat of paint as part of the refurbishment process, and the stone grey FS125 was closely colour-matched to blend in as much as possible.

“It was hugely rewarding to help revitalise such an iconic building, and we hope we can collaborate with Kew Gardens on similar projects in future!”

New South Bank Show For ISO-CHEMIE Tape

Image Above: The Secret Garden at Citu’s Climate Innovation District

Hundreds of new low carbon family homes under construction in Leeds city centre will be fully protected against the elements thanks ISO-CHEMIE’s expanding foam sealing tapes.

Windows and doors on more than 500 properties in the Climate Innovation District in Leeds’s South Bank will benefit from a high performance airtight, acoustic and thermal sealing thanks to ISO BLOCO ONE.

Developed by sustainable urban developer Citu as part of a major city regeneration project, the Scandinavian-style properties are the first family homes built in Leeds city centre in over 90 years. They are set to incorporate the latest in sustainable building technologies to cut the carbon footprint of the occupants and create a zero-carbon neighbourhood.

Sustainability is a key driver of the scheme, so self-adhesive foam tape has been specified to provide effective long-term sealing of the window and door frame expansion joints and gaps as each house is constructed off site in Citu Works, the developer’s state-of-the-art purpose-built factory.

The use of ISO BLOCO ONE will significantly help to achieve a Passivhaus target of 0.60 ACH at 50 Pascals airtight seal per completed building. The external seal area provides weather resistance and breathability with a minimum resistance of 1000 Pascals (hurricane forces).

The intermediate seal area provides extra thermal and acoustic properties, with a U-value of 0.8 or better, while the tape installation itself gives less than 0.01 m³ air loss when tested at 1,000 Pascals air pressure difference.

Mark Fox, operations manager at Citu, said: “ISO-BLOCO ONE is an excellent product, meeting the requirements for an easy-to-install, cost effective and extremely reliable sustainable sealing solution.”

Andy Swift, ISO-CHEMIE’s national sales manager, said: “Developers like Citu are looking at new ways to deliver low carbon homes, which use sustainable technologies. Our tapes support this, delivering measurable airtight, acoustic and thermal sealing properties.

ISO-BLOCO ONE offers a single product ‘fit and forget’ solution for fast and effective sealing based around the European RAL principles of three level sealing – the inside seal area is more airtight than the external one, allowing any trapped moisture inside the joint, or within the wall, to escape outwards rather than into the building.

Once installed, ISO-BLOCO ONE ensures a building is better protected from elemental factors like wind, dust and moisture ingress by accommodating the changes in structural movement caused by environmental, cyclical and settlement factors.

Product, which has Passivhaus certification, has CE marking and complies with energy saving regulations (EnEV) on windows and doors as well as the RAL quality assurance association, has an EC1 rating for very low emissions and a B1 fire resistant rating. It can accommodate extremes of temperature changes – from -30°C to + 80°C and is available with a 10-year performance warranty. More at www.iso-chemie.eu/en-GB/home/

illbruck Brings The Bacon For TP650 Trio Breakfast Mornings

0
0

Illbruck has brought ground-breaking installation tape and a lot of bacon sandwiches to Eurocell branches across the Midlands for a round of breakfast mornings to promote TP650 Trio.

TP650 is a compressed foam insulating seal. Once you remove the backing paper, the tape steadily expands to effectively seal all gaps and spaces between the frame and wall.

Impregnated with a flame-retardant resin, it’s extremely safe, and offers outstanding thermal efficiency, outstanding air-tightness and driving rain resistance of at least 600 PA. It also provides an extremely consistent finish.

Following a resounding rollout across the South West of England, illbruck and Eurocell chose the Midlands as the next region to trial the project.

“Our breakfast mornings are a fantastic opportunity for Eurocell customers to meet key members of the illbruck team, see TP650 Trio up close and learn more about its many benefits,” commented illbruck Product Manager David Naylor.

“Initially, many installers are quite sceptical about installation tape. Like thousands of other installers around the country, most of them have been using silicone for years, if not decades, and see no reason to use anything else.

“But they’ve also watched as thermal efficiency has become more and more important when it comes to making sales.

“Recent years have seen homeowners become increasingly conscious both of their environmental impact, and the rising price of energy. And governments, local authorities and other rule-setting bodies have brought in strict environmental legislation.

“Installers realise that, if they’re going to thrive in that ever-changing commercial environment, they need to start considering sealant solutions beyond silicone – and when they hear about the outstanding performance offered by TP650, it’s not long before they want to give it a try. I’m sure the bacon sandwiches don’t hurt either!”

A new professional cleaner has been launched for use on profiles laminated with RENOLIT EXOFOL Exterior films. Construction dirt, adhesive residue, and stubborn marks can all quickly contribute to extensive contamination. Whereas homeowners are recommended that warm soapy water and a soft sponge is usually all that is needed to keep window frames looking pristine, after fabrication or installation additional support may be needed.

The new RENOLIT EXOFOL Professional Cleaner is available in the UK to the window trade, directly from RENOLIT Cramlington Ltd. RENOLIT has developed the characteristics of their own cleaner to be specifically aligned with the properties of its RENOLIT EXOFOL exterior products.

The new cleaning product was intensely tested for long-term effects and substance interactions. “RENOLIT also monitors the usability and compatibility of the cleaner, which is not possible for the large number of other commercially available products” Tatian Priewe emphasises. The head of application technology at RENOLIT EXTERIOR continues: “the specific properties of acrylic surfaces are not always compatible with many cleaning agents such as solvents and some other chemicals”.

For Stefan Friedrich, head of RENOLIT’s Exterior Business Unit, reliability is therefore, clearly the focus: “We want to offer our customers the greatest possible safety in this field, and have complete confidence with our new cleaner.”

The RENOLIT EXOFOL Professional Cleaner is supplied in one-litre cans, which are sold individually or in packs of 10, is distributed in the UK by Adhesive Solutions Ltd at www.profilewrappingsolutions.co.uk, or phone 01422 524023.

CCG Manufacturing Ltd is a leading manufacturer of timber window and doors and is a member of the CCG Group, one of Scotland’s largest privately-owned construction and manufacturing companies.

The firm operates out of two semi-automated facilities located at the Group headquarters in Cambuslang, Glasgow, capable of producing up to 20,000 units each per annum thanks to an innovative mix of technology and expert craftsmanship.

Operating across a series of CNC production lines, CCG Manufacturing offers a consistent, high-quality finish produced at a rate that is 50% faster than window and door products made by hand. However, as means of further improving time and resource efficiency, CCG Manufacturing looked to Runners Sliding Systems and the ‘Multirail Auto’, a bespoke overhead conveyor system with a 62 meter continues loop that was installed within the robotic paint spraying line of the factory.

The system has an operator panel at the beginning and end of the cycle, allowing staff to easily adjust speed and start/stop the process from either position. Timber frames and windows are loaded and then passed through the automated system to the flow coater chamber where they are sprayed with wood preserver and then fully dried prior to being offloaded.

CCG Manufacturing Manager, John Paton, said: “Since its installation, the Multirail Auto has greatly assisted in improving the production process of our timber window and door products. In a busy factory, it was important to find the right product that could assist our team by achieving time savings and reducing man-handling on the factory floor.

John added “CCG will always look at where we can improve our manufacturing capabilities as we strive to deliver the highest quality product in the most efficient manner for our clients.”

Multirail is also available as a non-automated solution, these are often chosen by smaller operations across various sectors.

Daniel Wells, Sales Director at Runners Sliding Systems commented “We sell Multirail and Multirail Auto overhead track systems to a wide range of sectors across the country, our customers vary from small workshops to large factories, Multirail solutions are scalable to suit most space and production requirements”.

Seasonal Sealing Thanks To Advanced ISO-CHEMIE FOIL Technology

0
0

WITH the onset of winter, rapid and effective onsite sealing of window or door frame connecting joints in minus degree temperatures or in wet conditions, is provided by advanced external* sealing foil technology from foam tape manufacturer, ISO-CHEMIE.

The flexible humidity variable sealing foil ISO-CONNECT VARIO SD, available in full surface self-adhesive COMPLETE and COMPLETE DUO variants, enables onsite installation work to continue even in poor weather or wintry environments.

Developed for the extreme cold of the Scandinavian market, the foil adheres quickly, even to rough surfaces such as hemp blocks, down to – 8°c when wet seal would freeze at zero. This saves time and provides a high quality joint sealing solution, even if the foil remains exposed to the elements for up to six months due to construction work delays.

ISO-CONNECT VARIO SD not only adapts to seasonal variations but also provide an excellent external weather seal, which exceeds UK Building Regulations and airtightness in domestic and commercial buildings when used as an internal seal.

The COMPLETE and COMPLETE DUO variants enable the sealing foil to be located in place and repositioned if necessary after initial application before the full strength of the adhesive develops and takes effect.

Furthermore, the risk of leaks from poor or patchy adhesive application can be avoided while the foil can be plastered over immediately after installation, providing further time and cost saving benefits.

The risk of soiling on windows, surrounding construction work and on the building itself due to residual adhesive is also significantly reduced.

COMPLETE and COMPLETE DUO variants of ISO-CONNECT VARIO SD also comply with the specifications of the plastering guideline ‘Plastering window sealing foils’, which recommends a minimum bonding surface area of more than 75%.

*As an external seal, it must be covered over after six months.

ISO-CHEMIE specialises in the manufacturer of foam products from polyethylene (EPE), polypropylene (EPP) and polyurethane (PUR) using the latest production techniques.

Rapierstar Reveals Top Three Fastener Failings

0
0

Analysis of data from over 250 customer factory audits by window and door fastener specialist Rapierstar has revealed that most fabricators suffer quality, productivity and health and safety problems because of the same three basic fastener selection mistakes.

Rapierstar have now been running their Fastener Health Check audit programme for over a quarter of a century and have amassed a wealth of real-life fabricator feedback during this time, enabling them to offer unique insights into product quality and manufacturing efficiency. The three most common mistakes that Rapierstar’s Technical Consultants find on fabrication lines are:

  • The wrong type of screws being used to attach friction stays in 72% of audits.
  • Screws being used with the wrong type of drill point for specific materials in 64% of audits.
  • Screws made from the wrong type of metal being used for a particular application in 52% of audits.

The consequences of making these mistakes can be far-reaching, costly and potentially damaging to a fabricator’s reputation. Finished windows and doors can quickly develop problems, which results in expensive call-backs and reduced customer satisfaction, but the costs can mount up in the factory too as productivity suffers and the risk of injury to operatives heightens.

David Furness, MD at Rapierstar says: “In over 25 years we have never seen a fastener health check come back with a perfect 100% score. That suggests that every fabricator can improve their business simply by taking a step back and thinking about whether the various fasteners used throughout window and door construction are the best ones for the job.

“Fasteners may look like small commodity products, but their importance should not be overlooked. They are engineered components that have been designed to complement today’s advanced window and door materials, and help deliver on performance goals, production processes and the highest health and safety standards.”

In addition to its Fastener Health Check programme, Rapierstar offers a wide range of technical guidance to fabricators and installers, including free to download Recommended Fixing Manuals (RFMs), which have been compiled in cooperation with the leading PVC-U and aluminium profile systems. Its fastener specialists also work closely with fabricators, hardware suppliers and systems manufacturers to develop bespoke solutions and advise on the specification for fasteners required to pass specific safety, security and performance tests.

Image Above: ISO Chemie’s ISO-TOP FLEX-ADHESIVE XP enables installers to complete window installation faster even in wet weather site conditions

Rapid and effective bonding of window foils in wet weather site conditions is provided by ISO Chemie’s ISO-TOP FLEX-ADHESIVE XP high performance adhesive.

Capable of bonding to wet surfaces and even under water, ISO-TOP FLEX-ADHESIVE XP can be used to securely fix in position a variety of ISO Chemie’s window sealing foils including the ISO CONNECT VARIO SD, XD and INSIDE FD, as well as the more traditional range of EPDM products.

This enables window and facade installers to secure the foils in place even if the receiving walls are wet. This provides beneficial time and cost savings during the installation process as there is no need to wait for walls to dry out after a rain shower or in the winter, when condensation is a problem on metal frame buildings.

Applied by hand using a sealant gun, ISO-TOP FLEX-ADHESIVE XP is a cost effective, soft elastic solvent-free polymer solution that dries upon application forming a skin within 10 minutes. It provides an airtight connection between the foil and concrete, brick, stone, plaster and anodised aluminium walls.

Product is supplied in a 600ml soft tube, which can cover approximately 10 metres, and is suitable for temperature ranges of -40°C to +90°C.

1,000,000

This is the sales milestone reached earlier this year of the innovative and game changing trickle ventilator the Link Vent, launched by Glazpart in just 2016. Up to 1,000,000 windows have been fitted with the Link vents across the country. Reducing call backs, minimising negative feedback and maximising potential margins.

Homeowners love the smaller size and greater performance delivered by the product as it is less drafty when closed and there are fewer gaps to create those little whistles combined with complete control of the closure plate to allow just the right level of fresh air.

Adopted by fabricators, distributors and installers alike the vents, which are the size of a traditional 2000 vent, with the performance of a typical 4000 vent are leading the market now with more than 1,000,000 windows fitted with the Link vent, claims the company.

Fabricators have benefitted from the reduction in stock whilst speeding routing in production and you only need one vent type and rout size to meet the minimum regulatory requirements of Approved Document F. Smaller windows can now also comply due to the smaller 235mm vent size, how many small downstairs toilets pantry and utility room windows have been fitted with a 2000 vent which does not comply to the minimum requirements!

Installers have benefited from the much faster installation using the standard fitting clips but still with the ability to screw the vents on and there is no frustration from broken or lost end caps on the job as there aren’t any to be lost! Astute installers are also taking the opportunity to add value to the job with the premium colour finishes that match the increasing number of coloured profiles. Why sell a vent for £10 when you could get £20 per vent!

Homeowner and tenants’ feedback has also been very positive in that they love the opening action of the internal vent and disappears almost into the fabric of the frame or sash when closed. Plus, that it is available in 36 colours including the market leading wood grain finishes.

According to Dean Bradley – Sales and Marketing Manager

“The Link vent has been a roaring success as it addresses many of the concerns expressed by the fenestration market and house holders alike. House hold air quality improves as the product is used in the home due to a product designed with a very low air leakage and is available in a wide-ranging colour palette making it less obtrusive. “

ISO-CHEMIE’S WINFRAMER Achieves 30 Minute Fire Rating

0
0

ISO CHEMIE’s ISO-TOP WINFRAMER thermal insulating and load bearing bracket system for the rapid installation of windows has been fire rated to E30.

The award confirms ISO-TOP WINFRAMER can protect the entire window area from fire for a minimum of 30 minutes, guaranteeing the retention of structural integrity, as well as supporting at least 200kg/m and providing an air-tight cavity support.

Thirty minutes is considered enough time for people to safely escape a property in the event of a fire and help to delay the spread to adjoining rooms and buildings, keeping any damage to a minimum.

WINFRAMER, which already has Passivhaus certified status, is a structurally solid, pre-fabricated installation frame, manufactured to accommodate cavities up to 250mm. This allows windows to be supported independently from the face of the wall regardless of any external cladding being in place.

Product can be quickly cut to length on site and secured in position using a single component adhesive and, if necessary, fixing screws. This allows installers to fit windows into the insulation area between the inner and outer walls easily, avoiding the need to use metal brackets that cause non-repeating thermal bridging and give extensive problems when the windows need replacing.

Andy Swift, national sales manager for ISO-CHEMIE, said: “E30 fire rating, together with Passivhaus certification, enables Winframer to be specified for applications where both energy rating and safety are crucial factors – an ideal future design solution.

“Widely used in Europe, we are seeing growing interest among UK specifiers in Winframer to provide a solution to the current flawed method of installing windows to walls using metal brackets, creating a thermal bridge and probable route for fire to escape.”

The composite brackets can bear heavy windows loads, including Bi-fold doors, to provide a reliable, strong and high-performance support frame. Installation is quick with windows attached directly and secured mechanically using either standard fixing screws or fixing lugs in the usual manner.

A hinged insulation core combines with the composite wood structural bracket to become an integral part of the overall wall structure, providing compliance with window energy saving regulations (EnEV) and the RAL quality assurance association.

ISO-TOP WINFRAMER can be used with a range of ISO-CHEMIE foam tape sealant systems to provide effective and high-performance window sealing. These include ISO-BLOCO One, ISO-BLOCO One Control, ISO-BLOCO 300 and 600, the ISO-CONNECT Vario range of self-adhesive foils and fleeces, and ISO-TOP Flex Adhesive WF for bonding and sealing to masonry and joint/corner sealing.

Double The Holding Force Of Window Restrictors, Cubelock’s “Belt And Braces” Solution

0
0

To tackle the problem that window restrictors may be inadequate in preventing a determined effort to force a window open beyond the 100mm restriction, adding Cubelock’s CLB2 fixed restrictor can more than double the holding force of any window restrictor, says the company.

This patented product provides extra strength when it’s needed.  The Department of Health, Estate and Facilities Alert EFA/2013/002 highlighted that the force testing of window restrictors to BS EN 13126-5:2011 does not adequately address the excessive application of pressure. Testing of window restrictors, and in particular the forced opening test which is a maximum of 500N, is deemed insufficient by the Department of Health. Specifically in mental health facilities, where there is a requirement for higher levels of strength than the standard.

“To combat this, we designed the CLB2 fixed restrictor which fits alongside our CLS1 standard window restrictor to give it extra holding force,” says Toby Staff, Managing Director at Newstar Door Controls. “In this configuration a minimum force to break both of 5250N has also been confirmed by testing. We estimate that the addition of the CLB2 fixed restrictor more than doubled the holding force of the original fitted restrictor.”

“The advice from the Health and Safety Executive, is to follow the guidelines HBN 00-10 Part D: windows and associated hardware. Good practice would indicate that risk assessments, inspection and maintenance systems, should also be reviewed. Then all installed windows should be inspected to ensure they are adequate for the purpose intended. In particular this should include areas where they have the potential to be abused by excessive force. Where weaknesses are found, the CLB2 fixed restrictor which when fitted on its own has a holding force of 2641N, can be installed alongside with any window restrictor, making it a simple retrofit solution.”

The simple and effective Ascena Sliding Flyscreen offers call-back and add-on sales opportunities for all bi-folding and sliding door installations.

After the record-breaking summer enjoyed by Britons everywhere during 2018, sales of French, sliding and bi-folding doors are expected to hit new levels during the 2019 spring. But last summer also reminded those of us with garden doors what a nuisance flies and wasps and even the neighbour’s cat can be when we are trying to enjoy a glass or two as the sun goes down.

Just as sliding and bi folding door designs have been revolutionised in recent years then so too have flyscreen designs and performance with the introduction of the Ascena Pleated Insect Screen, to promise an effective solution to flies and wasps invading homes.

Offered to fabricators and installers as an add-on to almost any style and brand of French, sliding and bi-folding door, the Ascena Insect Screen is highly effective at allowing fresh air in and keeping every type of flying insect and other pests out, whilst also offering an extra layer of protection and shade against the rays of the sun. Smoothly and effortlessly sliding open and closed in seconds the Ascena Insect Screen is manufactured from high-grade aluminium and may easily be retrofitted against most types and brands of French, sliding or bi-folding door(1).

Aluminium extrusions, available in two standard colours – Anthracite Grey (7016), Pearl White – support high quality polypropylene mesh screens that are tough and cannot be torn or damaged in normal use. High strength, braided tensioning cords run horizontally to stabilize the screen and control vertical orientation of the handle bar. These tensioning cords run over precision bearings to ensure the high quality, polypropylene mesh slides smoothly with a low operating force.

The tensioning cords also prevent the mesh from blowing out in windy conditions. The Ascena Insect Screen withstands wind gusts up to 20mph before the mesh leaves the channel. This safety feature helps prevent tearing and if the screen does leave the channel it can be easily reset.

Ascena can easily be installed in openings up to 4000mmx2700mm as a single screen or may be combined as meeting screens to cover openings as wide as 8000mm 2700mm.

With more than 10,000 installed throughout the Unites States, the patented Ascena Insect Screen has undergone rigorous testing and exceeded 150,000 cycles but for peace of mind, the company offers a 5 year warranty (2).  A website and colour leaflet provide potential customers with further information (www.ascenascreens.co.uk).

1There may be exceptions; please check with a sales consultant before ordering

2The warranty does not extend to damage, accidental or otherwise, caused to the mesh or track system by pets, children or the occasional adult.

Uni-blinds® integral blinds manufacturer Morley Glass & Glazing is celebrating a special milestone alongside spacer bar specialists Technoform.

Over one million metres of warm edge spacer bars have been supplied to Morley in the four years since the business teamed up with Technoform to introduce its warm edge spacer bar technology to its Uni-Blind double glazed sealed units with integral blinds inside. Laid end-to-end, the million metres of spacer bars used by Morley since 2014 could stretch the entire length of the UK, from John O’Groats to Land’s End.

Following a two-year development programme in conjunction with German glass insulation specialist Technoform, from 2014 every Uni-Blinds double glazed sealed unit has come complete with a warm edge spacer bar as standard. The technology gives fabricators and installers the scope to provide windows and doors featuring integral blinds without compromising thermal performance.

Yash Naik, Product Manager at Technoform, said: “It’s great to see our products helping one of the industry’s most respected sealed unit manufacturers go from strength to strength. We would like to congratulate Morley on this fantastic achievement, and we look forward to seeing further innovations and success as our partnership continues.”

Integral blinds also offer an extra layer of insulation along with powerful solar shading to keep homes cooler during summer months. These added benefits give installers a great opportunity to enhance their window and door proposition, increase thermal efficiency and their profitability.

Martindale Makes The Switch To Installation Tape

One of Northamptonshire’s leading installers has become the latest firm to endorse tremco-illbruck’s TP650 Trio window installation tape.

For 40 years, FENSA-registered Martindale Windows and Developments have been bringing a vast array of windows, doors and conservatories to homeowners throughout the Northamptonshire region.

It was the company’s uncompromising commitment to quality that led it to inquire about state-of-the-art window installation tape.

“We’d been hearing more and more about TP650 Trio and silicone-alternatives in general over the past few years,” comments Martindale Director Russell Tarry.

“We were immediately intrigued by a product that claimed to offer the end-user much better performance than conventional installation methods – striving for excellence in everything we do is a key part of the Martindale ethos.

“But we’d also noticed customers becoming increasingly concerned with energy efficiency, and, in some cases, minimising their impact on the environment in recent years – all of which made TP650 a very appealing prospect.

“We were still a bit sceptical when the first box arrived. As good as the tape sounded, it was going to take a lot to trump a product as user-friendly as silicone. But as soon as we started using it, we were sold. It doesn’t just offer exceptional performance – it’s incredibly quick and easy to use, too.”

TP650 Trio is a compressed foam window installation tape.

It doesn’t just seal and protect corner joints from mould and fungi and significantly improve acoustic insulation – it also offers a consistently high-quality finish. And, most importantly of all, according to the company, ‘it’s a breeze to fit’.

“We’re delighted to see another superb installer become TP650 converts,” comments tremco-illbruck Product Manager David Naylor. “In an increasingly cost and environmentally-conscious age, I’m convinced that, before long, impregnated tape will be the industry’s default window installation product.”

A Response To Medway Maritime Hospital

“A few weeks ago, there was a reported incident at Medway Maritime Hospital,” says Toby Staff, Managing Director at Newstar Door Controls. “A man suffered serious injuries after falling 20 feet from a hospital ward window. He suffered a fractured skull, hip and jaw. The hospital confirmed that a patient on one of the wards fell from a ledge after forcing a window open and climbing out, according to the Executive Director of Nursing.

“We have known for five years that that the force testing of window restrictors to BS EN 13126-5:2011 does not adequately address the excessive application of pressure, as it was detailed in Department of Health, Estate and Facilities Alert EFA/2013/002.

“The DOH stated that the forced opening test, which is a maximum of 500N, is insufficient and in mental health facilities there is a requirement for higher levels of strength than the standard.

“As well as the advice from the Health and Safety Executive guidelines “HBN 00-10 Part D: windows and associated hardware” should be followed, which states that windows must not expose people to risk in regard to health and safety or location. There should also be a review of risk assessments, inspection and maintenance systems. All installed windows should be inspected to ensure they are adequate for the purpose intended and meet regulations.

“In particular we recommend inspecting areas where there is potential for abuse from excessive force or the potential to defeat the window restrictor by the insertion of a blade such as a screwdriver, thin knife or scissors. Cubelock can provide solutions should inspections highlight potential weaknesses.

“This recent incident at Medway Maritime Hospital shows the importance of auditing windows and window restrictors already fitted to assess if they are fit for purpose.

“At Cubelock we have re-tested our products to far higher levels of strength to show exactly how they perform. BS EN 13126-5:2011 requires a holding force of 500N, but we have tested to more than triple that, with CLB1 reaching 1907N, and CLS1 and CLP1 both attaining 1971N. Indeed, when these two products are working in tandem (i.e. CLB and CLS or CLP) we have achieved a holding force of 5250N exceeding the requirement over 10 times the maximum requirement.

“The test results show that the strength of Cubelock restrictors far outweighs what’s required by the current standard. It offers facilities managers within medical buildings a more robust window restrictor to keep patients safe. Furthermore, we offer many solutions to upgrade your existing window restrictor depending on how the end user determines it Health and Safety needs.”

Visitors to the Sherwin Williams – stand at this year’s FIT Show will be able to see live demonstrations of a new, fast cure, 1:1 mix ratio structural and weatherseal sealant, DOWSIL™ 121 Structural Glazing Sealant. Also featured display is DOWSIL™ 3363 Insulating Glass Sealant, a high performing , new high-strength silicone sealant engineered specifically for economic and energy efficient designs in demanding IG facades.

With a fast cure and 1:1 mix ratio, DOWSIL™ 121 Structural Glazing Sealant answers the challenges faced by facade contractors and manufacturers with slow-curing, one-part sealants, mixing challenges of multipart sealants, and limited movement capability of tapes. DOWSIL™ 121 mixes automatically in the gun and can be quickly and easily applied with an electronic gun making it convenient and simple to use on site or in the workshop. The real advantage of using DOWSIL™ 121 is its incredibly fast cure times – just one day (24 hours) compared with 14-21 days for single-part sealants – giving huge productivity savings. Because 121 from DOWSIL™ mixes in the gun, there is no need for costly specialist pumping and mixing equipment and their associated maintenance costs. This speed and convenience does not come at the expense of performance however, as DOWSIL™ 121 outperforms organic weatherseals and structural tapes, claims the company.

DOWSIL™ 3363 is a new generation high-strength silicone sealant that has been developed by DOW® to offer an economic and energy efficient joint solutions in demanding insulating glass facades. Engineered specifically for use as a secondary seal for double and triple air and gas-filled glazed insulating glass where high strength and economical joint sizes are required, DOWSILTM 3363 is an effective alternative to lower-strength conventional sealants which often require significantly larger joint sizes that can impact efficiency, productivity and in particular aesthetics.

DOWSIL™ is exhibiting on the Council for Aluminium in Buildings (CAB) Pavilion on stand E21 at the FIT show at the NEC from 21-23 May 2019.
