CPD On Airtightness In Construction

$

0

Andy Swift, national sales manager for window and door foam sealant specialists ISO-CHEMIE considers the trade-off between airtightness and ventilation in sealing products.

Air quality within a building is a big issue. The more airtight we make our buildings the less fresh air we get into them through random unwanted gaps within the building fabric. Such problems can cause other issues for people with respiratory problems or young children, so proper ventilation is crucial – it is often argued that if by reducing air loss you then need to build-in designed ventilation, then why bother in the first place?

The answer, apart from the fact that legislation must be complied with, can be summed up in one word: control. It is the difference between controlled air loss, or ventilation, and uncontrolled air loss and draughts, which is the nub of the whole issue.

Installation 1How is ‘Build Tight, Vent Right’ achieved? With regards to ventilation, this generally falls into two major camps – natural ventilation and mechanical ventilation. If you achieve an air loss of 3m3 (h.m2) @50Pa or less, then it is a necessity to use mechanical ventilation. With an air loss of more than 3m3 (h.m2), it is generally considered that well designed natural ventilation is sufficient for most domestic dwellings.

For unwanted air loss, it is generally acknowledged that the air loss between the junctions of windows and doors to walls, walls to floors and walls to ceilings accounts for more than 50% of the air loss in a house. Other common factors of air loss relate to fabric of the building itself and the various holes knocked through the fabric for an assortment of reasons such as drainage, heating flues, electrical cables etc.

The industry is starting to understand that airtightness is only half the story for the sealants. That is why the thermal insulation of joints between window, doors and walls is now included in the latest SAP calculations, where previously it had simply been ignored.

When choosing a suitable airtight seal, the full requirements necessary to create a long-term solution must be considered. If it is simply to seal the edges or overlaps of an internal airtight membrane, then movement and thermal insulation are unlikely to be major factors to consider as any number of various stick on adhesive strip tapes are likely to be suitable. As there are technical differences between them, some specialist knowledge or advice is always helpful.

However, when sealing an actual construction joint between similar or different materials, it is a different story. An illustrative example is the movement between joints created by the junction of different construction materials, such as windows to walls or walls to roof etc. Even joints between the same materials can move, such as brick or concrete expansion joints. The initial drying out of the building must also be considered.

In this respect, the differential movement between timber frame buildings and the external masonry facades is well researched and documented. But the different coefficient of expansion factors of different materials is less well known. When selecting an airtight seal for this type of application, consideration must be given to several factors to assess if it’s correct for the joint-type.

Tremco Video Shows Best-In-Class Performance Can Be Easy With TP650 Trio

$

A stunning new video sees sealant specialists tremco illbruck show just how quick and easy it is to use their best-in-class installation tape, TP650 Trio.

The two-minute clip takes installers through the simple steps required to fit and seal a window with TP650.

You can watch the new video here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W9hgyi9lba8

TP650 Trio is a pre-compressed, multi-functional polyurethane tape that’s impregnated with flame-retardant resin. Designed for new-build and replacement installations, it’s quick and simple to apply, and is vapour-permeable while still offering driving rain resistance of up to 600 Pa.

What’s more, it’s fully compliant with BS8213-4:2016 CoP for the survey and installation of windows and external door sets, and the Glass and Glazing Federation’s Guide to Good Practice.

David Naylor, TP650 Product Manager, commented: “Our excellent new video shows that outstanding performance doesn’t have to be difficult to achieve. In just a few minutes with TP650 Trio, an installer can fit a window product that will offer a lifetime of exceptional energy efficiency, sound insulation and weather resistance.

“A lot of other non-silicone sealant solutions on the market can be flawed. They’re incredibly difficult to align, or they crease around corners. Trio has none of these problems – and, as the video shows, can be measured and applied in no time.

“We’re adamant there’s always going to be a place for silicone. We produce significant amounts of it ourselves. But as consumers grow increasingly environmentally conscious, and sustainability regulations get more and more strict, we’re equally clear that solutions like TP650 are the future of window installation.”

TP650 Trio is currently being trialled in Eurocell branches across the South West. If it proves successful, the product will be rolled out across other areas of the UK.

Founded in Germany, but now with over a thousand employees in 30 locations around the globe, tremco illbruck is the world’s leading supplier of high-performance sealants, tapes and adhesives.

ISO-BLOCO ONE Opens Window To Installation Costs Savings

$
0
0

Up to 70% cost savings can be achieved when using ISO-BLOCO ONE high performance foam tape from ISO CHEMIE to install and seal windows.

The self-adhesive tape enables installers to quickly and effectively seal windows from inside the building during the construction phase. This can avoid the requirement to use time consuming and expensive external access systems, which together with associated health and safety issues, can contribute significantly to a project’s overall costs.

Moreover, because the foam sealant can be applied in the wet and rain, the installation of windows can be undertaken regardless of external weather conditions, avoiding further time consuming and costly delays.

This can add up to potential savings of hundreds of pounds per day, ISO CHEMIE estimates.

image2BLOCO ONE offers a single product ‘fit and forget’ solution for fast and effective sealing based around the European RAL principles of three level sealing – the inside seal area is more airtight than the external one, allowing any trapped moisture inside the joint, or within the wall, to escape outwards rather than into the building.

The external seal area provides weather resistance and breathability, while the intermediate seal area provides extra thermal and acoustic properties and the internal one air tightness and humidity regulation.

ISO BLOCO ONE provides a longer lasting seal for window and door joints up to 30mm wide and installation compliance to BS8313-4:2016. It is impermeable to driving rain at a minimum of 1,000 Pa – 66% higher reliability than most conventional joint sealing tapes.

The internal air tight seal has been tested at 1000 Pa pressure difference (20 times more than UK Building Regulations) and was found to give less than 0.1 m³ of air loss. At the same time, depending on tape width, it will also supply a U-Value of 0.55 and reduce sound by 63 dB, straight from the box.

Once installed, the tape ensures structures are better protected from elemental factors like wind, dust and moisture ingress by accommodating the changes in structural movement caused by environmental, cyclical and settlement factors. Product complies with energy saving regulations (EnEV) on windows and doors as well as the RAL quality assurance association and can accommodate extremes of temperature changes, from -30°C to + 80°C.

Product comes with a 10-year guarantee and is available from stock on next day delivery service. More at www.iso-chemie.co.uk

Rapid and effective air and weather tight sealing around windows and doors is provided by a new easy-to-use collar system from foam sealants specialists ISO-CHEMIE.

The self-adhesive ISO-CONNECT EPDM SEALING COLLAR is a single-piece bespoke solution, which can be quickly fitted around fenestration elements installed in façades and load bearing walls to provide long lasting external protection against the elements.

Featuring vulcanised sections, the collar can be fitted up to six times faster than alternative foil strip sealants via a butyl adhesive or a clip-in frame groove feature, saving onsite labour and material costs.

Product can be customised to specific applications – the fitter places the collar around the frame section in front of the wall before securely bonding it to the supporting wall or façade.

Manufactured from flexible EPDM (ethylene propylene diene monomer), which can compensate for joint movements due to its high elasticity properties, ISO-CONNECT EPDM SEALING COLLAR is resistant to extremes of temperature and weather.

It also possesses good diffusion properties and complies with the relevant building regulations and DIN EN standards, covering thermal conductivity, dimension tolerance, and resistance to driving rain on joints among others.

Supplied with a 10-year warranty and available in 0.6mm, 0.75mm, 1mm, 1.3mm and 1.5mm thicknesses, ISO-CONNECT EPDM SEALING COLLAR comes in a choice of four finishes to suit all applications. Titon’s SF Xtra Sound Attenuating Vents Help To Keep The Noise Down

$
0
0

Titon’s range of SF Xtra Sound Attenuator ventilators continues to go from strength to strength, with the company reporting a 50% increase in sales year on year. This can be attributed to the growing number of acoustic rated specifications throughout the UK, especially with demand for new homes resulting in more properties being built near to roads and other noisy environments.

The SF Xtra Sound Attenuator vents keep external noise levels down to more acceptable volumes, as well as provide sufficient air flow in accordance with the Building Regulations for ventilation, when used in the correct quantities.

Commenting on the popularity of the SF Xtra Sound Attenuator range, Tyson Anderson, Sales & Marketing Director at Titon, said: “These products have outstanding acoustic capabilities, which help reduce unwanted noise in a wide variety of applications, either as part of a new build or retrofit project. In fact, our SF Xtra SA vents keep sound levels down to more acceptable, habitable levels, reducing noise pollution – which can just as harmful to occupants’ health as unwanted airborne particles.”

Suitable for domestic and commercial installations, in certain situations the SF Xtra Sound Attenuator can be retrofitted over Titon’s standard 13mm slot. A high performance gasket on the ventilator improves the sealing in adverse conditions, while the vent can also be mounted to deflect air upwards or downwards. Plus, a number of special paint finishes are also available.

Tyson continued: “Our SF Xtra range is also capable of of providing higher rates of air flow at shorter ventilator lengths. As a result, not only can products be fitted across a wide choice of applications, there are some instances when fewer ventilators are required. This ensures the levels of total background ventilation stipulated in the Building Regulations are met, while the level of noise entering a property remains at a minimum.”

The SF Xtra Sound Attenuator ventilator is part of Titon’s SF Xtra range – and is already being widely specified throughout the UK by housebuilders and developers. Using the SF Xtra ventilator and canopy as its base products, the SF Xtra Sound Attenuator, as its name suggests, offers much-improved levels of sound attenuation, especially when compared to similar ‘acoustic’ products. This is supported by accurate data from an independent UK acoustic test house, with full details available from Titon upon request.

It is also important to note that a ventilator-canopy combination does not provide the same level of ventilation as a standard non-attenuating vent when it has been fitted with sound deadening material; therefore, more sound attenuating vents are needed than standard ones, in order to achieve the same total background ventilation figure in a building. Again, Titon can provide advice on this often misunderstood subject and help prevent incorrect specification.

Since January, Eurocell depots up and down the West Country have been stocking TP650 Trio, the best-in-class installation tape from illbruck.

The cutting-edge product has been flying off shelves across the region, but some depots have been particularly inundated with interest.

Eurocell Yeovil is one of those depots. “My customers love TP650,” says branch manager Jay Hannam. “Initially, quite a few of them were sceptical. Like thousands of other installers around the country, most of them had been using silicone for years, if not decades, and saw no reason to use anything else.

“But they’ve also watched as thermal efficiency has become more and more important when it comes to making sales. Recent years have seen homeowners become increasingly conscious both of their environmental impact, and the rising price of energy. And governments, local authorities and other rule-setting bodies have brought in strict environmental legislation.

“Installers realise that, if they’re going to thrive in that ever-changing commercial environment, they need to start considering sealant solutions beyond silicone – and when they hear about the outstanding performance offered by TP650, it’s not long before they want to give it a try.”

Jay has since been presented with a £100 Love2Shop voucher for TP650’s excellent performance at Eurocell Yeovil.

David Naylor, illbruck TP650 Trio Product Manager, commented: “It’s fantastic to see TP650 doing so well at Yeovil’s Eurocell branch. It’s a testament to both the time-saving, cost-saving, performance-enhancing benefits of the product. We’d like to thank Jay and all the other Eurocell depot staff for their hard work.”

Bohle Reinvents Clean!

Bohle has launched a revolutionary new cleaner which shifts stubborn dirt, paint and grime from a wide variety of surfaces, without damaging them.

XtraClean is a completely new cleaning formula, which cuts through grime without using chemical additives, acids or bleaching agents.

XtraCleanInstead it uses a specially developed combination of ultra-fine microparticles, essential oils and surfactants which combine to create a mechanical effect, which loosens dirt without scrubbing.

This means that it’s suitable for removing deposits of building dirt and rust from a wide variety of materials including glass, stainless steel, ceramics, tile joints and other hard surfaces.

Sold in a paste form, XtraClean is easy to apply using a standard soft cloth or sponge and then re-worked with water as required depending on the level of contamination.

Depending on the substrate it’s also powerful enough to remove graffiti from walls or even concrete or mortar splashes from glass without damaging it.

“It’s a pretty common story, you’ve installed windows and doors, you’ve gone away from site, while other trades have come in and you come back to find that  the plasterer or the render have not only plastered the walls but also your doors or windows!”, says Dave Broxton, Managing Director, Bohle.

“Alternatively you’ve left a metal canister or tin on a piece of glass, ceramic tile or machinery and it’s left rust marks – XtraClean, will shift it.

“It really is an incredible product. I’ve trialled it at home on chrome door handles which had become dull and slightly pitted. I didn’t need to scrub or rub. You simply apply XtraClean evenly over the surface and the microparticle and surfactants do the hard work.”

New Figures Suggest That Industry Is Underplaying The Potential Of Colour

$

New figures released by specialist extruder of gaskets, Extrudaseal, reveal that despite increases in overall volumes, black remains by far and away the dominant gasket colour.

According to its analysis, there was little change in the supply of gasket in the last two years, with black accounting for 92% of all window and door gasket it supplied in 2016 and 2017.

White was the next biggest seller accounting for 4.5% of sales in 2016 with a slight drop in popularity to 4.2% of the total last year.

Grey gasket remained the next strongest performer, accounting for approximately 2% of sales in 2016 and 2017, while brown accounted for approximately 1%.

Metallic gasket accounted for 0.2% of sales in 2016 and 0.1% in 2017, with the remainder in both years, (0.3 to 0.7%) made up by special orders.

IMG_3454Paul James, Sales Director, Extrudaseal, said: “Perhaps slightly disappointingly demand for colour gasket stood still last year, despite an overall increase in volumes.

“Of the colour gaskets we supply anthracite grey is singularly the most popular – which is a direct reflection of popularity the colour is enjoying across the board.

“But fundamentally, the opportunity to upsell aluminium product overall by colour matching gaskets to frames by both fabricators and installers, isn’t being exploited.”

Extrudaseal became a standalone business from parent and now sister company, Euroseal in 2012, giving new and dedicated focus to the then Euroseal flexible extrusion business.

Manufacturing gaskets for a wealth of systems, including Smart, ALUK, Metaltech, Senior and Ikon, amongst others, Extrudaseal’s range is available in more than 1000 RAL colours.

“The irony is that product differentiation in window and door manufacture and retail is very difficult to come by”, continued Paul. “We know colour gasket works for those customers who are using it because they’re telling us.

“Matching gasket into the frame colour, whether that’s grey, white or something else, delivers an effect which lowers the sightline so that it disappears into the frame creating a genuine point of differentiation for very marginal cost.”

This includes its RAL 9007 metallic silver gasket, designed to provide a match to contemporary silver powder coated installations, which accounted for approximately 0.1% of sales last year.

“The figures are clear – black remains what most of our customers buy from us. This also means that there is an opportunity that’s going untapped. We have the capability to manufacture in more than 1000 RAL colours, which add a tangible point of differentiation at the point of retail”, said Paul.

He concluded: “That’s a very real USP in a crowded market place.”

Hand protection specialist Globus has further enhanced its  portfolio of safety gloves with the introduction of the new SHOWA 4561.

Tested to the new EN388: 2016 standard delivering level D cut resistance, the new 4561 also features ZORB-IT® technology providing outstanding grip in wet and oily conditions due to an extra absorbent nitrile coating.

The combination of features makes it ideally suited to workers in the glass, glazing and installer sectors where there are significant cut hazards. It also offers abrasion and contact heat resistance, whilst at the same time delivering excellent levels of dexterity and comfort.

Winner of the DuPontTM Kevlar® Glove Innovation Award, the new SHOWA 4561 glove is manufactured using SHOWA’s engineered yarn technology. The result is a glove that is flexible, lightweight and comfortable whilst delivering Level D certified cut resistance.

The addition of SHOWA’s patented ZORB-IT® grip technology allows users to maintain a stronger grip in wet conditions without sacrificing safety, due to the unique way the coating on the palm and fingers absorbs and transfers liquids across the surface more effectively when compared to other nitrile coatings.

Ergonomically designed, the SHOWA 4561 replicates the hands’ natural curves for easy movement and comfortable, continuous wear. Additionally, the breathable 15-gauge liner allows warm air and moisture from inside to escape, keeping the hands of users dry.

“The new SHOWA 4561 is a fantastic addition to our portfolio of hand protection solutions. Its ergonomic design combined with cut and abrasion resistance thanks to the use of technical fibres deliver a wealth of benefits to wearers across a wide range of sectors where cut and abrasion hazards are commonplace,” said Gregory Tessier, Globus Hand Protection Product Manager.

TP650 Trio Takes Off At Eurocell Yeovil
